Community Behavioral Health - World Mental Health Day is 10/10, Breaking the Stigma Surrounding Mental Health
Studies show that mental illness impacts one in five adults.
Dr. Suni Jani, a psychiatrist at Community Behavioral Health, joins us to talk about breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness.
Dr. Jani says people with a mental health condition usually wait 9-12 years before seeking treatment. However, Dr. Jani says the sooner you see symptoms the sooner they can help you recover.
“The reason for the time is usually the stigma that’s associated with mental illness,” Dr. Jani says. “People do not want to acknowledge the feelings they are having as something that is not societelly acceptable – something they can’t share within their community and sometimes family members.”
Dr. Jani says they try to teach people about symptoms of mental health conditions, different treatment options, and to make it acceptable for families as a whole.
