What’s Happening Today – Oct. 5, 2017
Today on DelmarvaLife:
A couple of months ago we told you the story of Milton surfer Jay Liesener. He told us about a trampoline accident in 1989 that left him paralyzed and only able to use about 15% of his body. Jay wasn’t letting that stop him from enjoying his hobby. He says the water is the one place where his pain disappears. But over the years, Jay’s health has taken a toll on him and when we last spoke to him he was planing a final surfing trip of a lifetime in California. Jay and Team Surfgimp are back from their trip and they tell us all about the California waves and what an awesome, memorable experience this was for Jay and the entire team.
A trip to the dentist for a cleaning is pretty routine. In addition to having your teeth cleaned, your dentist will check your teeth for cavities or other issues that require attention. They’re also checking for oral cancer. Dr. Leigh Auchey, a dentist with Delmarva Dental Services, joins us on the couches to explain this vitally important screening.
This time of year, there’s no shortage of things to do on Delmarva and many of the events support great causes. Marketing Director, Amanda Smith, joins us in the studio to tell us all about the upcoming Women Supporting Women’s 2017 Walk for Awareness. The walk is taking place on Oct. 14 at Winterplace Park in Salisbury, Md. with registration starting at 8:30 am. Amanda also tells us about how important self-examinations are for women and men.
DelmarvaLife’s Sydney Whitfield visited the Great Hope Golf Course in Somerset County to learn more about the course that was opened in 1996. There is an upcoming golf tournament on Oct. 20 at Great Hope Golf Course – The Donnie Price Memorial Golf Tournament. Donnie Price was a staple in Somerset County while working or volunteering towards youth programs and other events within the community. He was always available and willing to help in any way whether donating his time or supporting programs for a good cause. Read more about the event and how to submit a team here.
Ever since the doors opened to the Ocean City Performing Arts Center in 2015, performers have been wowing crowds. We sent DelmarvaLife’s Sydney Whitfield to the center to learn about what we can expect in the near future.
The 2017 Academy Craft Show “Fired Up” is coming up, Oct. 21-22 at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Md. Chair of the show, Holly Fine, joins us in the studio to talk about how important art is and what we can expect to see at this years event. Holly says artists come from all over the United States and one neat part of the show this year is the ceramic studio on wheels.
Dr. Andrew Ristvey, an extension specialist in commercial horticulture at the University of Maryland Extension, tells us all about the aronia berry and shares a smoothie recipe with us using the berries. Aronia berries which are full of antioxidants, can improve blood circulation, balance blood pressure, prevent and help in the treatment of diabetes and much more.
- 16 oz Almond milk
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar to sweeten
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/4 cup of thawed aronia fruit.
It’s not every day you get the chance to win a brand new roof for your home. It’s all thanks to Spicer Bros. Construction‘s Delmarva’s Neediest Roof Contest. Nominations can be made from Oct. 2-Oct. 31. The voting period will be Nov. 6-Nov. 26 and the winner will be announced on Dec. 1 on DelmarvaLife.
