What’s Happening Today – April 23, 2018
Today on DelmarvaLife:
It’s a well-known fact that having a good role model in a young person’s life is important. Whether that role model is a parent, a neighbor, a teacher or even a good friend. One local organization is providing young people with law enforcement to act as a positive role model and they are joining them out in the playing field. Sgt. David Owens with the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office joins us in Historic Studio D to tell us all about “Cops to Coaches.”
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed a baby boy this morning in London. The new royal is fifth in line to the British crown and weighed 8 lbs., 7 oz., according to a Kensington Palace tweet. William and Kate are the first royal couple in more than 40 years to have three kids – most royal couples stopped at two kids.
It was a great weekend for boating, but officials say 2018 has been the deadliest start to the Maryland boating season in six years. Four boaters have died since April 4. Police Superintendent Col. Ken Ziegler and Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Sara Wallace say none of the four was wearing a life jacket that would have provided enough time until help could arrive. Just a reminder to wear your life jacket while you’re out on the water.
Looking ahead towards Mother’s Day – perhaps mom needs a winecation! There is one happening in Salisbury, Md. on Mother’s Day weekend. The event is sponsored by the Association of Liquor License Establishments. Attendees will receive a souvenir sampling glass to taste different wines. There will also be food pairings, craft vendors, and entertainment. The 2nd Annual Mother’s Day Winecation is May 12 from 1 pm-7 pm at Winterplace Park in Salisbury. Tickets are $25 per person and you must be 21-years-old or older to attend.
We’ve heard a lot of heart-breaking stories of how a young life is lost too soon. The stories are told by those who are left behind, figuring out how to keep the memory of their loved one alive. 30 years have passed since the death of Kent County High School Graduate, Mark Matthew Blake. In those many years, Kent County Graduates have been awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships in his memory. Mark’s sister, Angela Blake, stops by Historic Studio D to share Mark’s story and an amazing project she’s taking on to raise money for that scholarship. 100 Miles for Mark is taking place on May 23 from 7 am-5 pm starting at Salisbury University and ending at Kent County High School.
Captain Babe Wilson of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office is stepping in for Lt. Tim Robinson for a few weeks. He joins us in Historic Studio D to show us who you should be on the lookout for this week. Check out the Most Wanted list here.
The Delmarva Outdoors Expo is April 27-29 at the Delaware State Fair grounds in Harrington, Delaware. This year’s event features returning favorites such as Delmarva DockDogs, chainsaw carving, fishing demos, and a gun auction. Some new activities this year include drone racing, cornhole tournaments, casting contests and more activities for the kids. There will also be food trucks, a beer garden, two stages for presentations, and demonstrations. More information about this family-friendly event –> https://www.delmarvaoutdoorsexpo.com/
A little over a year ago, Valsilisa Seneko performed on the Mid South Audio stage as “Shirley Temple.” Shirley Temple would have been 90-years-old today so we thought it would be fitting to welcome Vasilisa back to the stage to perform for us.
