Talking to Your Kids About Drinking – Monday, April 20, 2015
MJ says it starts with having good, real conversations. Studies show that underage drinking is an all time low and that parents are the #1 influence in determining if their child is going to engage in underage drinking. Anheuser-Busch started Family Talk About Drinking over 20 years ago. In 2011, they contacted MJ because they wanted her to help them refresh the program.
MJ said its never too early to start with the limits and the boundaries, and having the drinking conversations with your children. Parents can then ask open-ended questions which cause your child to think through the process.
MJ said once the parent establishes limits, boundaries, and consequences they will have set up for their child, then they can sit down and have a conversation with them about events such as prom and graduation. Be sure to listen clearly as a parent because this is all a big process. MJ says to continue the conversation as the opportunities present themselves.
