Town of Whitehall in New Castle County
Chris Grunder feels that people are eager to get back walkable communities where you can walk down the street and get a cup of coffee or walk your kids to school.
“I think people are longing for the ability to connect with their neighbors and have that sense of community in where neighbors are looking out for one another and it’s not just a place where they sleep at night, they can be actively involved with their friends and family in community gathering places, whether that’s a park or a town center,” Chris says. ” Those things are things that were hearing and the people that were talking to are interested in bringing back again.”
Brian DiSabatino, Founder of the Town of Whitehall, says this project took years to plan.
“We spent the last few decades studying and emulating places not only from around the country but from the better parts of the Delmarva Peninsula, the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and the state of Delaware,” Brian says.
What they came up with was a town that has restaurants, shops, and parks, all within a quick walk to bike ride from your front door. Brian says this will reduce vehicular traffic off the roads.
Brian says, “The state of Delaware is voted the number one place to retire and this is going to capture the imaginations of those people as well as families and young couples.”
The Town of Whitehall will offer a variety of houses.
“We have townhomes that range from 3 to 4 bedrooms. They have a home that offers a master bedroom on the first floor, so if someone is looking for a “lock it and leave” type of lifestyle, it’s very low maintenance and is a great opportunity for young couples and empty-nesters individuals,” Brian says.
“When I grew up, I could ride my bike to get a slice of pizza and the neighbors could watch your kids or go check on your parents if you needed them to,” Chris says. “I think there’s a longing for people that want that back and they miss that.”
Brian is hoping the Town of Whitehall can bring back a sense of community.
