Hurricane Prep with State Farm and Schagrin Gas Co – Wednesday, July 8, 2015
June 1 to November 30 are the dates for hurricane season. Be sure to check your home insurance policy. Hurricane damage outside of high winds are not covered in your standard home insurance.
Standard home insurance:
- Wind damage
- Check with your agent
- Deductible may increase
- No rising water coverage
Another thing Nicholls suggest is take inventory of the items in your home.
- Take pictures
- Capture video
- Receipts on high dollar purchases
- Fire and waterproof area for important documents
Hurricane Emergency Kit:
- Drinking water: 1 gallon per person, per day
- Nonperishable foot & utensils
- First-aid kit
- Portable radio, flashlight, and batteries
- Tool Kit
- Cell phone charger
- extra clothing
- Pet Supplies, if necessary
When the power goes out, the ATM’s also go down. It is a good idea to make sure you have cash on hand and gas in your car. It is also a good idea to have materials available to protect the outside of your home such as plywood and tarps.
It is very important to have a storm evacuation plan and review it with your family so everyone is prepared.
Something else these storms can do is leave you without electricity for days. Sean Streicher talks with Marc Frey and Rick Levinson, with Schagrin Gas in Rehoboth Beach, on how a propane generator can help in these situations. You could power your entire home off of a propane generation with the different sizes Schagrin Gas provides. They also note that propane does not go bad and is ready to use for your needs during the hurricane season.
