Baby Born En Caul and Infants Swimming – Friday, February 27, 2015
Chelsea Phillips, Silas’ mom, had no idea until her mom showed her a picture the doctor took seconds after birth. Chelsea said Silas has been a little fighter despite his rare, premature birth.
Statistics show that this type of birth happens in fewer than 1 out of 80,000 deliveries. Neonatalist, Dr. William Binder, says this was a moment that will stick in his memory for some time.
YMCA has a water safety program:
- Bob off the bottom, get to side
- Reach and throw, don’t follow
- Life jacket, close to adult
- Boating techniques
YMCA offers swim lessons for children ages 6 months – 12 years old.
The infant swim resource is an immersion class for babies, 6 months to a year. A child is taught to float, rest and breathe. The goal of the program is that not one more child drowns. The idea is that if you teach a child to swim when they are young, swimming becomes instinctual.
Secondary drowning can happen up to 24 hours after you or your child has left the water.
Symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Trouble Breathing
- Coughing
- Kids not acting right
