While we wait, let’s go over a few things the movie got right, what they got wrong, and what they missed all together in predicting what life would be like today.
First the misses:
Flying cars – While there are a few futuristic models out there, they are nowhere near the daily drivers the movie portrays.
Weather control/predicting – It’s raining when Doc and Marty arrive in the future and Doc tells Marty to wait a few seconds and it stops raining. Now whether it was a really accurate weather report or someone controlling the weather is to be debated. Nevertheless, we’re not quite there when it comes to the weather.
Now on to the almost rights:
Hover boards – The movie has Marty flying around town on a hover board. No, we don’t have kids floating through the streets, but there are the two-wheel self balancing boards that are becoming more popular.
The Cubs winning the World Series – The movie predicts the Chicago Cubs to be the 2015 World Series Champions. While we don’t know for sure if this will become true, they are still in the playoffs making it possible.
Now for what they nailed on the head:
Flat screen TVs with hundreds of channels – It seems like each year they come out with a thinner TV – not to mention the hundreds of channels available to consumers.
Video conferencing – Marty is fired in the future through video conferencing. Everyday business is conducted with video conference services like Skype and FaceTime.
What they didn’t think off:
Cell phones – Early on in the movie, a young Marty is shown using a pay phone and there are no mention to cell phones.
Internet – There is also no mention to the Internet. It’s hard to believe the world today without it.
