Sussex Academy and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Delaware have teamed up for this free event. The event is open to the public and doors will open at 12:30 p.m., with the show beginning promptly at 1 p.m.
According to Gina Derrickson, community & communications manager for Sussex Academy, the twins will be doing all different kinds of demonstrations during the presentation.
“They’ll talk about their backgrounds and their poetry… it’s serious and it’s also fun,” Derrickson said.
Mills and Chukwuocha share the title of 17th Poets Laureate of Delaware, which was appointed to them by the Governor. The duo identify themselves on Twitter as ‘tutors, mentors, big brothers, community activist, father-figures, artist, master social workers, non- profit leaders, brothers, fathers and sons.’
Leeann Wallett, program officer for the Delaware Division of the Arts, says the fact that the twins share the title of 17th Poets Laureate of Delaware is very unique.
“It’s unique, one because they are twins and two because they are sharing the title,” Wallett said.
Wallett adds, both men are veterans, vegetarians and fathers and most importantly they are social workers who value the impact their poetry has.
Derrickson says the family friendly event will serve as a way to bring the community together and show them all Sussex Academy has to offer.
“Our desire to get these poets is because our school is growing, we added a 9th grade…this coming year we will add our senior class… our goal is to make the public aware that our school is there. We thought it would be a great way to get people into the school.”
Registration for this event is not mandatory, however, it is encouraged. Click here to register.
