Sports at the Beach Branches Out, Archery Program Gets Underway
Sports at the Beach is trying to stay ahead of the curve. So far, it has worked.
The archery program at Sports at the Beach is only a few months old—but you wouldn’t know it. Sports at the Beach, typically known for baseball tournaments and the like, is branching out. According to Brian Turner, director of activities, a lot is owed to the business’ owner.
“I would love to get into his mind sometimes because he sees things and makes them happen,” Turner laughs.
The visionary owner realized there weren’t any archery ranges in downstate Delaware and decided to capitalize on the opportunity.
Sports at the Beach offers archery golf and range shooting for all ages. Turner says participants extend from 10-year-olds to senior citizens. Younger children are able to use the shorter targets and those 14 and older may shoot with out supervision. Although the demographics skew more towards males, Turner says the sport has attracted its fair share of females.
“I expected a lot of teenage boys or boys in their early 20’s but it has been surprising to see the amount of ladies we get out here,” Turner says.

According to Turner, participants typically come to the range with a basic knowledge of archery.
The business receives a compilation of people, including hunters and all around sports enthusiasts. Turner was a little different, finding excitement in the sport because of his love for the hit television show Arrow.
Score cards are available if participants are playing archery golf and targets have point values if participants are at the range. Turner says guests want to just go out there and shoot around, that’s welcome too.
Archery golf and range shooting are offered on weekends from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and weekdays by appointment from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. As the weather gets colder, the businesses is talking about bringing the sport into its indoor academy. Currently, the range is located in a section along the parking lot that Turner says has been vacant for an extended amount of time.
In addition to archery, Sports at the Beach also offers indoor batting cages, one-on-one and group lessons for baseball and pickleball. To learn more, visit www.sportsatthebeach.com.
