State Farm Spring Break-Ins – Monday, March 30, 2015
State Farm Agent Greg Redell said that in 2013 there were 11,800 break-ins that resulted in insurance claims per month.
Redell offered some great advice on how you can protect your home while you are away. He said that burglars like to find homes that they can get in and out of quickly without any distraction, so to avoid this you should always fake a daily presence. This means keeping the lights on, trimming the hedges, keeping them under 3 feet high and installing double glazed windows.
In the inside of your home, you can inspect your door knobs, making sure the locks are in good order. If you have a sliding door, put something in the slide behind it, so it cannot be opened. If you have valuables make sure they are put away. Talk to your neighbors and let them know you are leaving for a few days.
Before you leave your home, there are a few key tips you should remember:
- Don’t share that you are leaving on social media.
- Hire a house sitter
- Alert the police of your absence
- Neighborhood watch group, if you don’t have one then think about starting one.
