Rehoboth Beach Holds 37th Annual Sandcastle and Sculpture Contest
WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 1
It’s back for its 37th year and sand lovers are swarming the beaches. The annual Sandcastle and Sculpture Contest will kick off Aug. 1 on Fisherman’s Beach at the north end of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.
The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting more than 100 teams for the event. In past years, the chamber has seen a variety of sand sculptures, including swamp animals, mermaids, pyramids, crabs, dolphins, sharks and of course, sandcastles.
Artists can start their sculptures at anytime of the day during Saturday’s event. However, they must be complete for judging by 3 p.m. Participants may register their entry anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult to register.
Both adults and children may participate in this event with categories ranging from business, adult (15 and older), children (7-14) and child (6 and under). The event is free for spectators. The judging begins at 3 p.m. and winners will be announced at approximately 5 p.m.
Prizes will be awarded to the top 10 judge’s favorites in both the adult and 7-14 child divisions. One judge’s favorite will be awarded in the business category. Special awards given to all participants in the 6 & under child’s division.
Two people’s choice awards will be handed out during this year’s contest. The general public can vote on their favorite adult and child division creation by completing an event evaluation. All regular contest rules apply.
In the event of bad weather, setup and registration may be delayed up until 10:30 a.m. If bad weather continues, the event will be postponed until the following year. If bad weather occurs during the contest, participants may continue at will or at the discretion of lifeguards.
