A Gold Star Pin is awarded to the immediate family of a soldier who was killed in action. If the soldier wasn’t killed in action, but was on active duty, the family receives a Next of Kin Pin.
The VVA Gold Star Program helps both types of families by sending letters on certain anniversary dates or by connecting them with resources available to them.
They’ve even organized the “Delaware Hometown Hero” banners. These banners feature a picture of a fallen soldier and some baisc information about them. They were hung throughout the state and gave people the chance to pause and remember the sacrifice they made.
Coming up on Saturday, September 12th is the 3rd Annual Gold Star Gala which recognizes those families who lost a loved one and paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The gala will be held at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino and is open to anyone. For more information, visit www.delawarevva.com.
