Seventh of Ten 2016 Jefferson Award Winners: Daeveon Deshields
From raising funds for his church youth group and local homeless shelters to delivering meals to the elderly and cookies to inmates, Daeveon helps people from every walk of life.
“I have taught him it is more blessed to give than to receive since he was very, very young” said Daeveon’s grandfather, Diaz Bonville. “He has always cared about helping other people since he was about 4-years-old.”
One of Daevon’s biggest projects is “Helping Our People Excel,” or HOPE. He collects hygienic necessities like shampoo, soap and toothpaste to ensure the homeless can still maintain a healthy lifestyle despite their misfortune. This degree of selflessness coming from somebody who is not even in high school yet is unique, and that makes him perfect for the Jefferson Award.
“I don’t like to see a whole lot of people sitting out on the road with signs ‘I will work for food,'” Daevon said. “I like seeing them being happy with all the stuff they need.”
