Seventh Annual Surf Swap Challenge, Now Float Fest, Returns to Fager’s Island in OCMD
The seventh annual Fager’s Island Surf Swap and Paddle Board Event will take place on Saturday, June 4 in Ocean City, Md. with a new name and an added event.
The Fager’s Island paddle boarding event will now be referred to as ‘Float Fest.’ Float Fest starts with two SUP races beginning at 9 a.m., consisting of a five mile race for the competitive type and a 2.5 mile recreational race for the less competitive.
A children’s race will be held after these two races, which begin at noon. The cost for the children’s race is $10 and boards will be provided.
Float Fest’s newest addition, June Jam, will begin at noon and include adult tastings from RAR Brewery and Hoop Tea. A buffet of tacos and fajitas will be featured with the tastings and entertainment will be provided by Higher Education.
South Point Oyster Farm, a local oyster farm, will be on hand selling their fresh oysters from Chincoteague Bay for $1 an oyster to be donated to the Maryland Coastal Bays Program. Partial proceeds from the entire event will be donated to MCBP to benefit the groups Terrapin program.
“We just think it’s a good cause,” Dawn Ehman of Yoga Vibez says. “I go out there and clean the bay and we want to spread awareness to keep the bay clean.”
Ehman helps run the event each year and says the event was initially started by Fager’s Island.
“It started with Surf Swap, then added paddle boarding and kayaking and now it is just paddle boarding,” Ehman said. “We get people participating from North Carolina, Boston, we get locals, really from all over.”
Ehman says about 80 people participate in the event each year.
The course is set up in an easy manner for spectators to watch. Five mile competitors will receive cash prizes. To sign up for the event, go to paddleguru.com. If you would like to purchase tickets for food and drink, visit www.fagers.ticketleap.com.
