Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church Holds 50th Annual Art Show on July 2

On Saturday, July 2, Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes, Del. will hold their 50th annual Art Show.
The 50th annual Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church Art Show has been a summertime highlight at the Delaware beaches since 1966. This years show is sold out with 148 artists coming from Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and more.
Saturday’s event will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Karen Fischer and Shelly Souder have been working side by side throughout the planning of the show and expect the event to go off with out a hitch. Fischer says the show has changed tremendously over the years.
“Fifty years ago, St. Catherine’s Guilds came up with the idea to raise money to do things around the church,” Fischer, art show co-chair, says. “They got together and decided to put on an art show. It was a clothesline art show—people would come up and put the art on the clothesline.”
The annual art show occurs on the first Saturday of July each year, drawing thousands of people from the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond. The annual event is a juried art show, for first and second year participants.
Fischer says this years exhibit will showcase wonderful paintings and photographs, exquisite jewelry, masterful carvings, beautiful ceramics and mixed media creations and more. The artists and artisans will be set up in exhibitors’ booths surrounding St. Peter’s Square.
In addition to exhibiting art, the artists and craftspeople donate artwork to the show’s raffle and silent auction. Fischer says in the old days, the church would purchase a painting from artist Howard Schroeder for $100 and auction it off. This year, Howard’s son, John Schroeder, donated one of his father’s paintings for the show.
“This art show benefits local community outreach,” Fischer says. “Everything we earn, after our expenses, we distribute to different charities in the area.”
In addition to the auction, the church will hold a raffle, silent auction and kids activities including face painting.
From 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. the Episcopal church women will put on a turkey salad luncheon for those attending.
