Education and conversation about eating disorders are what often reach out to others who are in danger, so John Michael Walls came to tell his story in hopes of helping someone else.
Started with emotional eating at age three, John said that all his life he has struggles with restriction, over exercising, bingeing, and more negative effects of an eating disorder.
“Even through high school I struggled and masked it and tried to hide it,” said John.
After an injury, John struggled with depression, which made him hyper-focus on working out and exercise. He said that it became a tunnel-vision mindset, but he still wasn’t happy with himself.
It also affected his health drastically. Anorexia Nervosa can cause your immune system to drop extremely fast, joints, muscles, and organs can deteriorate due to lack of nutrition.
But when John graduated from college his parents took serious concern in his health, and the lack of treatment options for men with anorexia made it difficult to find answers.
He accredits his recovery to help from his family for searching out every avenue to help him find help, and his faith in God giving him the will to trust the people around him for help.
If you or a loved one are struggling with any form of eating disorder, John encourages reaching out to friends and family for help. If you would like to learn more about eating disorders or how to receive help, please click here to view the National Eating Disorders website.
