When told of his award, Jay said, “Thank you! I don’t deserve that.”
But the people who know him, like Susan Massey with the Board of Education, say Jay is very deserving.
“He has a very loving soul,” Massey said. “He would help a friend in need anywhere that he could.”
Jay gives his all to everyone he meets.
“Jay is Mr. Fruitland Little League,” said Tom Robinson of the Fruitland Little League.
Jay has volunteered for the Fruitland Little League for about eight years.
“He’s installed lighting systems on three different fields that we have. It’s incredible,” Robinson said. “He’s brought in crab cakes to our concession stand.”

Jay also does volunteer work with the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service Team and the Wicomico County Family Leadership Committee, among other things.
“Whether it be emergency services or whether it was the Fruitland Little League, Tom spends an awesome amount of time there,” Massey said.
And during the work day, Tom completes projects throughout the school district. Blair Todd, construction manager for Wicomico County Public Schools said of Jay, “He’s always got a positive outlook.”
But family always comes first for Jay, according to Massey, who said, “He has two wonderful sons and has raised them on his own and does a wonderful job with that.”
Of his volunteer work in the community, Jay said, “I love doing it…I don’t know! I do, I just love helping the community.”
