Tuesday on DelmarvaLife, we learned more about diabetic retinopathy. Catherine Smoot-Haselnus, M.D., of Chesapeake Eye Center, told us retinopathy is when the blood vessels in the eye act like sprinkler hoses and begin leaking proteins, plasma and fluids into the retina. Dr. Smoot says it can eventually lead to vision loss. She says the longer a person has diabetes, the greater their risk of developing retinopathy.
