Family Emergency Preparedness Day this Weekend in Dover
“The purpose of the event is to increase awareness about being prepared for all types of emergencies,” said Gary Laing, community relations officer of the Delaware Emergency Management Agency.
This free event, which takes place from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. is co-sponsored by the Delaware Citizen Corps, Kent County Department of Public Safety, DEMA, Delaware Division of Public Health, Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security, and the City of Dover.
Two Citizen Corps Emergency Kits will be given away each hour, and there will be free lunch provided to the first 1,000 visitors.
“We try to make it fun for the whole family,” Laing said.
There will be a variety of activities provided by many vendors, including the DEMA Drone Squad, American Red Cross Disney Pillow Case Project, Kent County Mobile Command Unit and Paramedics, Dover Air Force Base, Little Creek Fire Company, and Delaware State Police.
“Any number of emergencies could happen at home, and we bring all types of vendors and organizations to help families be prepared in those situations,” Laing said.
Those in attendance will also have the chance to meet the Dover Police Department’s new mascot Chase from ‘Paw Patrol.’
Food demonstrations will take place in the preparedness activity tent, as well as the Red Cross Disney Pillow Case Project. Kids may participate in emergency kit relay races along with games for all families to win prizes in the Preparedness and Safety Exhibitor Search.
“In recent years we’ve had well over a thousand people,” Laing said.
Events will take place outdoors as well as inside the Delaware Agricultural Museum.
