Shorecare, based out of Dover, is an in-home health care agency that provides services to individuals in their home, assisted living, and long-term care facilities. With more than 60 employees, including nurses and other health care professionals, Shorecare provides customized care to hundreds of patients throughout Delaware. It was the company’s growth and success that caught the attention of the Small Business Administration, which named Shorecare its 2016 Delaware Woman-Owned Business of the Year.
Lieske was honored for her for her achievement at an awards dinner held in early May at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Del.
“SBA’s 2016 Delaware Woman-Owned Business of the Year title could not have gone to a more deserving business than Shorecare of Delaware,” says SBA Delaware District Director John Fleming. “Like many entrepreneurs, Ms. Lieske’s journey to successful business ownership was not easy. But she persevered, and, today, her business is a lifeline to so many Delawareans who are able to live independently, thanks to the in-home care that the Shorecare team provides. It is a privilege to spotlight such a deserving entrepreneur through SBA’s small business awards program.”
Lieske has personal, first-hand experience in providing home health care to others. When she was just 12 years of age, her mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Lieske and her father cared for her mother for the next 29 years.
With that background, Lieske decided to open her own business with a mission of providing compassionate home care service.
But it wasn’t easy for Lieske, who says she originally bought into a home health care franchise that she invested in with her savings. She also took out a second mortgage to sustain it but says she found out afterward that the previous owner was under investigation for embezzlement and that the company itself was being investigated.
“The second mortgage was basically lost,” according to Lieske.
Despite losing thousands of dollars through no fault of her own, Lieske didn’t give up. She used whatever money she had left to start her own home health care business, Shorecare of Delaware. Even though it has one office, located in Dover, Shorecare provides 24-hour-a-day care for patients in all three counties of the state.
“We grew to come a steady, strong and reliable company,” Lieske says. “It solidified the hard work, the struggles. It just was something to show people that your dream can come true.”
Lieske’s “secret” to her success is quite simple.
“It’s never to give up,” she says. “You’ve got to believe in yourself. You need to have a vision that you follow. “I’m not just an owner. You have to love your business and you can’t give up.”
Lieske’s hard work and perseverance have indeed paid off. In addition to receiving recognition by the SBA, Lieske is proud to note that Shorecare of Delaware has earned an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.
