The skipjack is the official state boat of Maryland. They’ve been used to dredge oysters in the Chesapeake for well over 100 years.
Sean takes the wheel of a skipjack, but not a normal size one – a model skipjack. He’s at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum with Gary Nylander, commodore of the Model Sailing Club at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.
Gary says they have about 25 model skipjacks in their club and they race them six times a year.
Sean takes the controls and drives a skipjack, with a little help from Gary – and the wind.
The model skipjack races take place June 12, July 17, August 21 and October 16.
