National Garden Club Poetry Contest Winner is Third Grader at OC Elementary, Lily Carson
Lily Carson, a third grader at Ocean City Elementary School, has won first place in the third grade division of the National Garden Club’s Poetry Contest.
Lily says she was ecstatic after she went through a series of clues to guess the winner of the contest only to realize all signs pointed at her. She was also surprised to learn that her teacher was keeping the exciting secret from her for three weeks.
Lily wrote the poem at the beginning of the school year and had almost completely forgot about her submission, which is why she was so surprised when they announced her name during an awards assembly at school. Lily’s poem, which was an optional assignment that she saved for the very last minute, can now be found in a book of poems comprised of poems by other Garden Club contest winners.
Lily’s poem is titled, “Three Hungry Frogs,” and and says it took her about an hour to come up with the frog themed poem, but finally found inspiration after her mother helped her brainstorm ideas. To listen to a reading of Lily’s award winning poem, watch the video above.
