Brian Laird – Second of Ten 2018 WBOC Jefferson Awards Winners
“I certainly thank you,” he said. “I’m very surprised.”
Brian’s daughter, Katie Eby said of her father, “I know he doesn’t expect an award like that, but definitely deserving.”
Humble and hard working are some words that come to mind when describing this Delmarva family man.
“He’s always taught that’s what you should do, help others out before you help yourself out,” he said.
From volunteering with St. Peter’s, Eastern Shore and American Legion Baseball, to countless programs through the Princess Anne Ruritan Club, Brian stays active in the community.
“Brian Laird is one special, special guy,” said Katharine Allen of the Princess Anne Ruritan Club. “He’s wonderful with school activities. He’s wonderful with Ruritan. The school bus he drives, he’s wonderful with all of his students.”
Brian also coaches baseball at Washington High School & Academy and the Salvation Army’s youth football program.
Greg Peacock, who nominated Brian for a Jefferson Award, said of him, “Oh my land, he does everything! He fixed the field for them, he puts all the lights up out of his own pocket. At night, when the ball game is over, he stays and washes all the uniforms.”
Brian’s former coach, George Stewart, said of him, “[When] he said he’s going to do something for you, he’s going to do it.”
Brian’s granddaughter, Tori Travers, agreed, saying, “One thing I’ll never forget is him telling me once you’re committed, don’t lost the commitment.”
And Greg Peacock echoes that sentiment, saying “He’s just one of a kind.”
Despite all he does for the community, Brian remains humble about his accomplishments.
“There’s a lot of people that are deserving more so than myself, but I really appreciate the award,” he said.
