Whatever it is, Assateague Island National Seashore is doing something right.
Assateague Island is currently ranked number 1 by USA Today’s 10 Best National Park Beaches list, beating out competition like Baker Beach — Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Honokohau Beach — Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and Limantour Beach — Point Reyes National Seashore.
Liz Davis, Chief of Interpretation and Education at Assateague Island, admits there is solid competition. Davis says Assateague is currently beating out other National Park Service sites with beautiful lakes, rivers and shorelines with beautiful beaches, but there is one aspect that puts Assateague ahead.
“I truly think it comes down to our own sense of place. Each one of us has had a unique experience with a place or landscape that makes it special to us. Beaches are pretty amazing that way! Assateague is very close to multiple major metropolitan areas with huge populations. Many people ‘find their park’ here at Assateague. ”
The national seashore spans two states—the larger northern portion of the island is in Maryland while the southern portion is in Virginia.
Guests can view wild horses roam the beaches in their natural habitat. In addition to the wild ponies, Assateague’s beaches are known for swimming, shell collecting or just strolling or relaxing on the white sand.
